Book Description
In India, policies and programs at different levels of the government cover various dimensions and strategies in gender development. Over the years, efforts have been made to empower women socially, economically, and politically. However, due to a lack of synergy and coordination, the achievements are not satisfactory. It is imperative that an integrated policy and strategy be formulated to address the economic, social, and political issues related to women, along with the requisite programs and schemes. Though India has created protective legislations for women, the enactments have not been easy to implement. The vastness of the country, the scattered nature of women workers, their lack of education and legal literacy, and the indifferent attitude of government bureaucracy have all contributed to the continuing vulnerability of women. This is true not only for unorganized rural women, but also for urban women workers. Although the constitutional commitments to women find reflections in the planning processes, legislation, policies, and programs of the central and state governments, the current socio-economic status of women is unsatisfactory in terms of almost all important indicators of human development. Women, Welfare and Empowerment in India contains research papers by social scientists and academics from different parts of India, focusing on specific gender-related issues. The collection provides valuable information for researchers, non-governmental orgainzations, and government agencies and functionaries. It contains 42 contributions related to women issues, categorized into the following six themed parts: Health, Nutrition, and Fertility of Women â?¢ Education and Training of Women â?¢ Employment of Women â?¢ Self-help Groups and Empowerment of Women â?¢ Problems of Rural Women â?¢ Women, Media, Politics, and Human Rights.

Book Description
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Aligarh Muslim University (Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India), course: Economics, language: English, abstract: International efforts to address gender inequality have largely emphasized education as a means of achieving women's empowerment. Education serves as the conduit by which women, long rooted in the private sphere, move into the public sphere and assert themselves on an equal basis with men. As a springboard to employment and economic independence, advocates say, education provides the critical foundation from which further empowerment flows. It is in this backdrop that the present paper tries to find the relationship between inequality in education and women empowerment. The entire paper is divided into three parts. The first part is introductory that talks about the second and third goal of MDGs which is achieving universal primary education and promote gender equality and empower women respectively with certain indicators to achieve these goals. This part also gives a brief account of the gender inequality in education and employment world wide. In the second portion, the importance of education in general and women education in particular has been highlighted. It talks about the gender inequality in literacy in India. A comparative analysis between different states of the country is being made with regard to the parameters like education dimension index and the same index if adjusted for inequality. Further, the parameters like inequality adjusted HDI, education and income index have been taken for few countries to make a comparative analysis. To find the impact of inequality in education on various other parameters, a correlation matrix has been calculated. To know the level of women empowerment in various parts of the world, the variables like female share in national parliament, percentage of female literacy and female labour force participation rate has

Book Description
This is a book about understanding women’s empowerment and pathways as well as roadblocks to women’s economic empowerment in rural India, as understood through an evaluation-based research of a state-funded social sector programme located in the education department – Mahila Samakhya (MS) – in Bihar, one of the socially and educationally most underdeveloped Indian states. The book presents findings of the three-year research that adopted a mixed-methods approach and evaluated the impact of MS on various facets of empowerment of women coming from the most marginalized communities. The study, therefore, tries to go beyond evaluating the MS programme and uses the research findings and insights to raise certain critical issues pertaining to social policy planning and implementation, especially in the context of women’s education and empowerment.
